A stone left in place
You can bring back the memory of a pebble without bringing back the pebble itself.
Look from the path
Choose a visible stone or group of stones that can be observed without leaving the permitted route. Notice its outline, color and relationship to the surrounding material. Avoid moving it for a better composition. The actual setting is part of the observation and often makes the note more interesting.
Record its character
Sketch the shape with a few lines or take a photograph for your own reference. Describe what is visible without guessing the geological name. A smooth edge, a pale stripe or a mottled surface is a useful detail. Keep an uncertain identification separate from a direct description.
Leave the subject there
Natural objects are part of the shore and may be protected by local rules. A drawing or note gives you something to revisit without removing the object. When you look at the page later, include the surrounding scene in your memory rather than treating the stone as an isolated souvenir.
